Grady “Wayne” Johnson

Wayne retired from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) on June 01, 2004. Wayn retired with over thirty (30) years in law enforcement.

Wayne began his career in law enforcement as a dispatcher with the Hickory, NC Police Department in June 1972. Wayne went on to become a trooper with the NC State Highway Patrol (SHP) in January 1975. Wayne became a Master Trooper before leaving SHP to attend Campbell University in June 1983. While a Trooper, Wayne investigated approximately 2000 traffic collisions, many of which were multi-vehicle and multi- fatality collisions. Wayne was certified in the use of Doppler Frequency Radar, time/distance speed timing devices and chemical breath testing instruments. Wayne also instructed firearms, speed timing devices, defensive tactics, defensive/ pursuit driving and was a physical training instructor in the SHP’s basic training schools.

While Wayne was attending Campbell University, he worked full time as a detective with the Harnett County Sheriff’s Department. Wayne was assigned to the City/County Narcotics Unit. Wayne conducted approximately 500 investigations involving illegal drug violations of both state and federal law.

In May 1986, Wayne Graduated from Campbell University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Sociology. Wayne was hired as a special agent with the SBI in August 1986. Wayne began his career with the SBI as an agent assigned to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) State/Local Drug Task Force in Wilmington, NC. While assigned to the DEA Task Force, Wayne conducted approximately 200 state and federal drug investigations. Wayne has had extensive experience in collecting and preserving evidence for presentation in both state and federal courts.

As a Special Agent with the SBI, Wayne has also been a polygraph examiner. Wayne conducted approximately 800 criminal polygraph examinations, as well as numerous pre-employment polygraph examinations. Wayne was later assigned to the SBI’s Office of Special Investigations. As an agent assigned to that office, Wayne investigated political/public official corruption cases, judicial standard cases, police involved/excessive force cases and SBI internal affairs cases. Wayne has also instructed interviewing/interrogation techniques, undercover drug operations/surveillance techniques, internal affairs and police shooting/excessive force investigations in SBI academies.

In April 2002, Wayne was promoted to SBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC). As an ASAC, Wayne supervised other SBI agents’ criminal investigations. Wayne retired as an ASAC with the SBI on June 01, 2004.
